Homes typically ignite due to embers generated during a wildfire, not generally the big wall of flames. However, research is needed on home-to-home ignitions and how this impacts communities when a wildfire threatens. IBHS has a unique opportunity next week to join the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) in Ohio during free-burn tests of four structures that will provide valuable knowledge on how home’s burn and how they can ignite a neighboring property. These tests will measure the heat generated from a burning home and the potential to ignite a nearby building.
This week at the IBHS Research Center, researchers are conducting preliminary tests with the thermal imager shown to prepare for next week’s field experiments. Stay tuned for updates on this wildfire research, find IBHS wildfire resources on DisasterSafety.org at disastersafety.org/wildfire.
