IBHS FAQs

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) offers three membership levels:
Organizations that do not fall within these categories are not eligible for IBHS membership.
Eligible organizations can begin the membership process by contacting IBHS. The process includes submitting a membership application and determining the applicable annual dues based on membership type.

IBHS primarily serves the property insurance industry, including insurers, reinsurers, agents, brokers, and risk modeling organizations.
Through our research and communications, we also support homeowners, businesses, builders, policymakers, and communities working to reduce risk and improve resilience to natural hazards.
Yes. IBHS makes a wide range of research, guidance, and resources publicly available to support homeowners, businesses, and communities in reducing disaster risk.
Certain materials, technical insights, and engagement opportunities are exclusive to members.
No. IBHS is a scientific research and communications organization serving the property insurance industry. We do not test, evaluate, or certify products at the request of manufacturers or distributors.
Our research agenda is member-driven and planned in advance. When product testing is conducted as part of a research project, materials are sourced through standard supply channels.
IBHS has an office in Tampa, Florida, with a world-class Research Center located in Richburg, South Carolina.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) has three levels of membership:
Insurer membership is open to insurers and reinsurers that conduct business in the US or re-insure risks located in the US.
Affiliate membership is open to independent insurance agents, brokers and managing general agents.
Associate membership is open to catastrophe modelers and other companies that provide risk analysis for the built environment to the property insurance industry that want to support the IBHS mission.
If your company is not in one of the categories described, you would not be eligible for membership with IBHS.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety is a research and communication organization that conducts building science research for the US property insurance industry. We do not test, evaluate, or certify commercial products at the request of manufacturers or distributors.
Our research projects and test schedules are guided by our members and planned in advance. Should our research plans call for testing a particular product or class of products in the future, we obtain the product through normal supply chains, as we do for most of the products and materials we use in our research.
