IBHS FAQs

Am I eligible for membership?

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) offers three membership levels:

  • Insurer Membership – Open to insurers and reinsurers that conduct business in the U.S. or reinsure U.S.-based risks
  • Affiliate Membership – Open to independent insurance agents, brokers, and managing general agents
  • Associate Membership – Open to catastrophe modelers and companies that provide risk analysis for the built environment and support the IBHS mission

Organizations that do not fall within these categories are not eligible for IBHS membership.

How do I become a member of IBHS?

Eligible organizations can begin the membership process by contacting IBHS. The process includes submitting a membership application and determining the applicable annual dues based on membership type.

How much does it cost to become a member?

Annual dues vary by membership type and are assessed on a calendar-year basis (January–December). For detailed information, please contact Larry Scott at lscott@ibhs.org.

Who does IBHS serve?

IBHS primarily serves the property insurance industry, including insurers, reinsurers, agents, brokers, and risk modeling organizations.

Through our research and communications, we also support homeowners, businesses, builders, policymakers, and communities working to reduce risk and improve resilience to natural hazards.

Can non-members access IBHS research or resources?

Yes. IBHS makes a wide range of research, guidance, and resources publicly available to support homeowners, businesses, and communities in reducing disaster risk.

Certain materials, technical insights, and engagement opportunities are exclusive to members.

Does IBHS offer product testing services?

No. IBHS is a scientific research and communications organization serving the property insurance industry. We do not test, evaluate, or certify products at the request of manufacturers or distributors.

Our research agenda is member-driven and planned in advance. When product testing is conducted as part of a research project, materials are sourced through standard supply channels.
