2013 Black Bear Cub Fire
On March 17, 2013, the Black Bear Cub Fire in Sevier County, Tennessee, highlighted how structure-to-structure fire spread can rapidly escalate losses—even under moderate wildfire conditions.
Research & Analysis
What began as a single cabin fire quickly spread through the Black Bear Ridge Resort, ultimately destroying 53 cabins and damaging 20 more.
Despite relatively low wildfire danger and moist forest conditions, strong winds, limited water supply, and closely spaced buildings contributed to rapid fire growth. The event demonstrated how fires can spread from structures to surrounding vegetation—and back again—creating a dangerous and fast-moving fire environment.
Post-fire investigations by IBHS identified key factors driving losses, including radiant heat, ember exposure, and building-to-building ignition. These findings reinforce the importance of addressing vulnerabilities at both the structure and community level.
