Wildfires can have a devastating impact on homes, business, and entire communities. As a peril, wildfire differs from some other catastrophe-type events in that the built-environment contributes to the hazard by adding fuel to support fire spread. Wildland fires burning in vegetation can spread and ignite a structure which becomes a source of flames and embers to potentially ignite nearby structures. This can lead to a “domino effect” in the propagation of fire structures becoming the primary fuel, known as an urban conflagration.
