AN IBHS DISASTER DYNAMICS ACADEMY

When & Where:

August 12-13, 2026 (2 days)
DAY 1: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, ET
DAY 2: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, ET

IBHS Research Center – Richburg, South Carolina

This Member-exclusive event will include both classroom-style sessions and live laboratory demonstrations. Please hold these dates and stay tuned for additional event details and registration information.

What to Expect:

This on-site Disaster Dynamics Academy will focus on commercial property research, hazard mitigation, and resilient building strategies for wind, hail, and wind-driven rain exposures.

Designed for underwriting and loss-control professionals, the event will provide participants with a practical look at how commercial buildings perform during severe weather events and what mitigation strategies can help reduce losses across multiple lines of business.

IBHS Members attending this event will gain insight on:

  • Wind, hail, and wind-driven rain hazards and their impact on commercial building performance
  • IBHS research on commercial roofing systems, assemblies, and associated failure mechanisms
  • Commercial roof vulnerabilities, including flashing failures, ballasted roof performance, and membrane roof hail damage
  • Wind-related vulnerabilities associated with openings, roller doors, and attached building components
  • The role of wind ratings, installation quality, and maintenance in commercial door performance
  • Real-world examples of commercial building failures observed during severe weather events
  • Wind-driven rain vulnerabilities, including impacts related to Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) units and building envelope performance
  • FORTIFIED Commercial and Multifamily program requirements, resilient solutions, and retrofit opportunities
  • Cost considerations and approaches for evaluating mitigation investments and resilience improvements
  • How to apply hazard mitigation and resilience concepts across commercial lines of business

This event will also include discussions on emerging commercial resilience topics, including commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and related exposures.

Live Demonstrations & Lab Experiences:

Attendees will experience live demonstrations throughout the two-day event, that could include:

  • Observation of commercial roofing assemblies and construction details
  • Commercial roof testing and discussions around wind and hail performance
  • Wind-driven rain demonstrations and associated building vulnerabilities
  • Tours and demonstrations highlighting commercial resilience research conducted at the IBHS Research Center
  • Show-and-tell sessions focused on FORTIFIED Commercial Roof designation requirements, contractor considerations, and the evaluation process

Who Should Attend:

While all IBHS Members are welcome, this training is intended for attendees who operate within underwriting, loss control, risk engineering, commercial property claims, catastrophe management, and commercial product teams.

Key Takeaways:

Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of commercial property vulnerabilities related to wind, hail, and wind-driven rain, along with practical mitigation strategies and resilience solutions that can help inform underwriting, loss-control recommendations, and commercial risk management practices.
