10-Year Wind Performance of Asphalt Shingles
How does a decade of weathering affect how asphalt shingles perform against wind?
The research examines how age, climate, roof orientation, and shingle unsealing influence long-term wind performance, providing new insights into the durability of asphalt roofing and how asphalt shingle wind resistance changes throughout a roof’s service life.
Research
Asphalt shingle failures have been repeatedly observed in landfalling hurricanes and severe convective storms at wind speeds well below design levels. IBHS research demonstrates that standard test methods do not adequately predict real-world performance, and that roof age is a crucial factor in the wind performance of asphalt shingles. To quantify changes in performance over time, IBHS installed asphalt shingles from multiple manufacturers and product lines on roof aging farms.
10-year-old asphalt shingle products were harvested in 2024 and 2025 from aging farms in four climate zones to evaluate the wind resistance of asphalt shingles after a decade of service. By coupling 10-year, 5-year, and baseline wind resistance data, we highlight the differences in product performance evolution with age and underscore stark differences in product-level performance that demand a need to know what product is on a roof for effective risk mitigation.
