Because interior water damage to residential construction remains one of the most consistent and ever-present sources of insurance claims and losses, the IBHS Residential Committee and the Research Advisory Council developed this “State of the Risk” report to identify reoccurring drivers of interior water loss. Despite the omnipresent nature of these losses, the spectrum of loss drivers classified as interior water damage ranges widely from winter weather impacts and modern appliance failure rates, to regional construction practices, and human factors that influence maintenance and unfortunate accidents.

This report represents consistent themes identified by the two IBHS committees as meaningfully contributing to today’s picture of interior water damage with the understanding that inflation-driven cost pressures continue to affect the price of nearly all building materials.
