Asphalt Shingle Durability
The roof is a building’s first line of defense against weather, and damage to roof coverings is a leading driver of insurance losses. One of IBHS’s key research objectives is to identify high-quality roofing products and provide consumers with clear, performance-based information.
Research
Our analysis of asphalt shingles has examined whether higher-performing products share common physical characteristics. This research found that sealant strength is a critical factor in resisting wind damage, particularly after hail impact.
Since opening the IBHS Research Center in 2010, IBHS has developed wind and hail testing programs for shingle roofs. These projects have evaluated how well standard test methods predict real-world performance.
Findings from this work have led to the development of improved test methods and material evaluations that better identify durable roofing products — underscoring the need for stronger standards that distinguish products that truly perform.
