This live event will be streamed online.
What to Expect:
Tune in for IBHS & ICECHIP: The Next Generation of Hail Research, an exclusive Members-only virtual event.
Join us in Boulder, CO as we kickoff the ICECHIP (In-situ Collaborative Experiment for the Collection of Hail In the Plains) project – the first multi-institution US hail field campaign in over 40 years! 15 institutions and four international partners will traverse the Plains for six weeks, gathering comprehensive data on hail producing thunderstorms. The IBHS Hail Field Teams will be deploying disdrometers within a network of mobile instruments leveraging modern technology to revolutionize what we know about hail – one of the costliest hazards of severe thunderstorms.
This live event will feature:
- an in-depth look at IBHS’s role in ICECHIP and its goals of improving hail swath mapping, better understanding hail environments and trajectories in thunderstorms, and determining how the physical characteristics of hailstones evolve over the lifecycle of a thunderstorm.
- highlights of our fleet of rapidly deployable disdrometers that collect data on hail size and concentration, see our hail crusher that examines the hardness of hail, and how 3D scans create replicas of unique hailstones.
- insights from key ICECHIP institutions and how partnerships with IBHS are furthering our understanding of hail to reduce losses associated with this hazard.
Joining hosts Christina Gropp and Rachael Gauthier will be members of the ICECHIP Hail Deployment Team:
- Dr. Ian Giammanco, Managing Director of Standards & Data Analytics and Lead Research Meteorologist
- Brenna Meisenzahl, Research Project Scientist
- Jake Sorber, Research Project Scientist
- Lucas Faulkner, Lab Technician
