COMET Apparatus

The Component Materials Evaluation Testing (COMET) apparatus is a single-fan system used to evaluate how individual building components perform under high-wind conditions. The system can generate wind speeds up to 170 mph, exposing materials such as roof shingles and panel assemblies to controlled wind forces.

COMET Apparatus Features

Sensors beneath the test area measure wind pressure during testing, while adjustable tilt angles allow researchers to evaluate how roof slope influences pressure loading.

COMET testing complements other wind experiments conducted in the IBHS full-scale test chamber. Together, these tests enable researchers to assess building performance across multiple scales and improve understanding of how individual components contribute to overall building resilience.
