AN IBHS DISASTER DYNAMICS ACADEMY

When:

February 21 & 22, 2024 (2 DAYS)

Day 1: 9 am – 4 pm

Day 2: 8:30 am – 12 pm

Where:

IBHS Research Center

5335 Richburg Road
Richburg, SC 29729

What to Expect:

Join IBHS for our first Disaster Dynamics Academy of 2024 – Intersections of Resilience and Sustainability: Examining our Built Environment in a Changing ClimateThe impact of a changing climate on the natural hazards and where they occur geographically has increased losses and exposure of vulnerable infrastructure. Record-breaking losses in recent years from historically lower severity perils underscores the need to revisit how we assess risk. The two-day DDA featuring IBHS and guest experts from the building science community will concentrate on the following themes:

  • Learn how the perils driving the highest losses in 2023 are shifting
  • Understand how the interaction of resilience and sustainability can influence risk and building design
  • Identify new, emerging building materials and construction practices
  • Explore regulatory requirements for energy efficiency and energy codes, as well as their relevance to building performance against natural hazards
  • Outline ways to integrate and apply resilience solutions into insurance operations

Attendees will develop an understanding of how vulnerabilities in our built environment are exposed to changing risks from evolving natural hazards. Attendees will explore resilience and sustainability. When resilient and sustainable building practices are aligned, communities will be better prepared for extreme weather. When those practices diverge, communities will continue to be vulnerable despite being more environmentally friendly.

Sessions will also show attendees how resilience and sustainability practices can be incorporated into industry operations through IBHS’s mitigation programs like FORTIFIED and Wildfire Prepared Home.

This Disaster Dynamics Academy will include hands-on laboratory experiences to strengthen classroom learning objectives and allow attendees to be immersed in resilience and sustainable construction practices.

Thoughts from Past Attendees

“This information was very helpful and is of value to my role in the claims organization. Info regarding the inaccuracy of observer data is a key callout as it is often foundational in deploying claim associates. I would recommend [DDA] to all Directors in our Underwriting, Product and Claim organizations.”

DDA Attendee

“I am responsible for my company’s disaster response, so the information about your deployment and tracking was very helpful.”

DDA Attendee

“I focus on the pricing aspect of CAT perils, so learning more about the science behind the perils is extremely helpful.”

DDA Attendee

“We will integrate the information from this into risk assessment modeling.”

DDA Attendee

“I left with several ideas for improving post-loss analytic practices.”
