What to Expect:
Join IBHS for our first Disaster Dynamics Academy of 2024 – Intersections of Resilience and Sustainability: Examining our Built Environment in a Changing Climate. The impact of a changing climate on the natural hazards and where they occur geographically has increased losses and exposure of vulnerable infrastructure. Record-breaking losses in recent years from historically lower severity perils underscores the need to revisit how we assess risk. The two-day DDA featuring IBHS and guest experts from the building science community will concentrate on the following themes:
- Learn how the perils driving the highest losses in 2023 are shifting
- Understand how the interaction of resilience and sustainability can influence risk and building design
- Identify new, emerging building materials and construction practices
- Explore regulatory requirements for energy efficiency and energy codes, as well as their relevance to building performance against natural hazards
- Outline ways to integrate and apply resilience solutions into insurance operations
Attendees will develop an understanding of how vulnerabilities in our built environment are exposed to changing risks from evolving natural hazards. Attendees will explore resilience and sustainability. When resilient and sustainable building practices are aligned, communities will be better prepared for extreme weather. When those practices diverge, communities will continue to be vulnerable despite being more environmentally friendly.
Sessions will also show attendees how resilience and sustainability practices can be incorporated into industry operations through IBHS’s mitigation programs like FORTIFIED and Wildfire Prepared Home.
This Disaster Dynamics Academy will include hands-on laboratory experiences to strengthen classroom learning objectives and allow attendees to be immersed in resilience and sustainable construction practices.
Who Should Attend:
While all Members are welcome, based on the content, we especially encourage Members who operate within property claims, adjustment, and risk management departments to attend.
What to Wear:
Casual attire. Please wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes with no slick soles or heels.
