American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) – A database is being compiled by qualified, professional home inspectors based on information gathered through the ASHI Homeowners’ Insurance Survey Form. Learn how this unbiased factual data can play a role in your company’s successful evaluations and help policyholders protect their houses. Applications will be discussed for insurance agents and underwriters, individual homeowners, community groups and the movement to strengthen homes against natural disasters.

A new white paper written by Vice President of Risk Management Services Monte Kern, CPCU, will be released detailing how data can be used to deliver improved performance of a carrier’s homeowners’ portfolio. Session 4 – 10 – 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. – noon Salon 20 Weather Decision Technologies (WDT) – Everyone knows that the largest U.S. weather event of 2005 was Hurricane Katrina, but what was the largest weather event of 2006? Surprisingly, it was the April 2006 Indiana hailstorm that resulted in $1.3 billion in damage and produced more than 282,500 insurance claims. We will review hail storm statistics for a comprehensive view of the impact of hailstorms to insurance carriers, take a look at the sources of hail data verification and provide the latest information on what research is going on in the private and public weather sectors.

7– 8 a.m. – Breakfast Exhibit Hall Ballrooms D & E 8 – 10:15 a.m. – IBHS staff workshops Session 1 – 8 – 9 a.m. and 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Salon 16 Fortified…for safer living® and other trends in new residential construction: An introduction to the many new options available to consumers and builders and a discussion about the ways in which these trends can be combined. IBHS staff and an expert in the homebuilding industry will discuss disaster-resistant construction, building for environmental conservation and incorporating energy efficient features into a new home.
Session 2 – 8 – 9 a.m. and 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Salon 17 Mitigating Losses in Oil Heat Storage: Nearly 10 million homes use oil for heating, and issues related to leaks have impacted underwriting of homeowners insurance. Representatives from the National Oilheat Research Alliance present a practical look at the joint efforts with IBHS to mitigate insurance losses and offer a case study about how one large insurer has utilized the information. They will also discuss state trust funds, new technology, new inspection procedures and training, and appropriate remedial response. Session 3 – 8 – 9 a.m. and 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Salon 18 Making the most of your IBHS membership: Members will gain insight into becoming more engaged and learn how to access and utilize the IBHS resources available exclusively to them. Take a guided tour of the IBHS members-only web site and get updated about ongoing engineering, building code and other research activities, including the IBHS Property Loss Experience Database. Learn how to become more involved with the Fortified…for safer living® and Open for Business® programs and how IBHS can help you share the property loss mitigation message with agents and policyholders. Session 4 – 8 – 9 a.m. and 9:15 – 10:15 a.m. Salon 19 All about Business: A discussion on emerging IBHS research and programs aimed at helping to reduce commercial losses, including observations about building performance during severe weather events, the new IBHS business property protection criteria and Open for Business® continuity planning and recovery tools.
