Port Charlotte, FL - The first Fortified…for safer living® homes in Charlotte County, Fla., are now complete.  Two houses built by Tarpon Coast Builders, LLC, have earned the disaster-resistant designation from the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).

Tarpon Coast Builders has been building to its own SafeHome® standard for nearly two years, but decided to add IBHS criteria to achieve the "Fortified" designation.  A Tarpon Coast SafeHome® is also certified by the Energy Star and FPL BuildSmart programs.

By exceeding traditional building methods, owners of a Tarpon Coast Safe Home® can have a lower total cost of ownership, because of the energy efficiency and availability of reduced insurance premiums as a result of the stronger construction standards.

Recent hurricane damage and destruction of homes in Southwest Florida led Tarpon Coast Builders to recognize that Florida families need stronger, hurricane resistant homes.  Tarpon Coast Builders president Mike Romig said, “My knowledge and experience in the shipbuilding and cement manufacturing industries has enabled us to develop construction methods which provide safer, stronger homes.  Those building methods exceed the current building code requirements in Florida and address the dangers of hurricanes, tornados, fires and floods that occur in this area.  The completion of these homes is another step in Tarpon Coast Builders’ mission to bring moderately priced, safe, energy efficient and environmentally friendly homes to residents of Southwest Florida."
