Tropical Storm Irene is swirling across the Atlantic Ocean.  While her destination is still uncertain and how strong she’ll become is unknown, the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) says using time wisely this weekend will allow you to prepare your home for this or future storms.

IBHS says the three steps to take now are:

1. Clean your yard.  Remove anything that will become flying debris, including dead tree limbs and lawn furniture.

2. Prepare to protect windows and doors.  Know how you are going to protect your windows and doors and prepare those materials now.  If you’re using plywood panels, make sure they’re no less than 5/8” thick.  Install permanent stainless steel anchors and bolts in masonry, so it won’t take long to install panels when a storm comes.  If you’re securing shutters to a wood frame home, use ring shank nails.

3. Batten down the hatches.  Wind-driven rain can also be a problem, so be ready to close and lock all windows, doors, skylights and vents in your home to prevent water intrusion.  If you’re in a flood prone area or near roads that are expected to flood, be prepared to seal off the base of doors with sand bags or plastic sheeting and tape.
