Tampa – The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) wants to remind property owners there’s a right way and a wrong way to protect your home’s most vulnerable points – the windows.
When windows are broken, wind and water enter into your home and damage or destroy your belongings and add to the pressure on the underside of your roof, which increases the chance it will blow off.
While some property owners may believe masking tape will control window shattering, IBHS says it will not prevent the breakage of glass, or the damage that follows.
Windows need to be impact-resistant and properly installed, or protected by shutters. Covering you windows with plywood is also an option.
IBHS recommends using plywood that is at least 7/16 of an inch thick (5/8” is best). There are specific nail and spacing requirements to properly secure the panels based on the size plywood you need. Check with your local home improvement store for installation techniques. Visit the IBHS web site for this and other information to help increase your home’s natural disaster protection, or call 1 (866) 657-IBHS (4247) to obtain free single copies of IBHS home protection materials
