Tampa – Homeowners who want to have the upper hand on water damage are getting help from the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS).
Is Your Home Protected From Water Damage? is a new IBHS publication that takes readers on a room-by-room tour of a home, explaining how to stop common types of home moisture problems from developing, and showing how to spot problems before they become expensive.
According to IBHS, the keys to minimizing water damage in the home are keeping vigilant and acting quickly and thoroughly if and when a problem occurs. Tips in the guide include:
Identifying leaks and cracks. Pay particular attention to windows, doors, roofs, foundation and exterior walls, plumbing and termite-damaged material.
Good maintenance. Regularly inspect metal flashing, vents, attics, basements, air conditioners, expansion joints, exterior wood sheathing and siding and drywall to be sure they are in good condition.
Proper cleanup. If water intrusion occurs, quickly address the problem by removing standing water and all moist materials. Clean with bleach and water solution where necessary. Consult with a licensed building professional who can determine the extent of any repairs.
IBHS also suggtests homeowners grade landscapes to drain water away from foundations and aim irrigation systems away as well, maintain exterior paint because cracks or peeling can reduce resistance to water intrusion, and keep home humidity levels low.
