Tampa – A free disaster planning tool now available from the Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) can help small business owners minimize losses and speed recovery if a disaster strikes.
Open for Business is a new guide that comes in the form of a file folder. In addition to providing a place for organizing important material such as key contact information, inventory lists and insurance papers, it’s printed with steps to help analyze risk and develop a disaster plan.
Some basic steps that all businesses should take include:
- Develop an emergency plan and be sure your employees are familiar with its contents, including building evacuation routes.
- Review your current insurance policy with your agent, and discuss coverage for specific perils, which can require separate policies.
- Decide what records you will need. Make back-ups of all computer records and maintain them at least 50 miles off site.
- Consider where you would relocate if a disaster forced you to move.
Single copies of the Open for Business folder are available by clicking here or calling toll-free, 1 (866) 657-IBHS (4247). The folder can be used in conjunction with the Open for Business Toolkit, an online tool available on the IBHS web site. Also available from IBHS is the free brochure, Getting Back to Business-A Guide For The Small Business Owner Following Disaster.
IBHS is a national nonprofit initiative of the insurance industry to reduce deaths, injuries, property damage, economic losses and human suffering caused by natural disasters.
