National Hurricane Conference Awards IBHS for Disaster-Resistant Home Building Program

Tampa - The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) received an Outstanding Achievement Award for Mitigation at the 2002 National Hurricane Conference in Orlando for its “Fortified…for safer living” program.

The Awards Committee cited IBHS for taking a leading role in Florida and nationally in developing and promoting programs for disaster-resistant construction, in order to lessen the potential damage and injury from hurricanes and other natural disasters.

“Fortified…for safer living” is a national, all-risk new-home construction initiative, which features affordable options for added protection against natural disasters. Since the launch of this first-of-its-kind program in October 2000, five “Fortified” homes have been built in Florida, and two more are currently underway. This year, the program will expand outside of Florida, first to North Carolina, and then to other states.

“We greatly appreciate the National Hurricane Conference’s recognition of “Fortified…for safer living,” said IBHS President & CEO Harvey Ryland. “This award will add to the national attention the program is receiving as we bring the benefit of disaster-resistant homes to additional states.”

As the “Fortified” program grows, additional peril protections are added to the construction criteria. When it debuted, the program addressed wildfire, windstorm and flood, Florida’s three most destructive natural perils. In 2001, hail and tornado requirements were added. Freezing weather and earthquake criteria will be addressed this year.

IBHS is an initiative of the insurance industry to reduce deaths, injuries, property damage, economic losses and human suffering caused by natural disasters.
